Ba Be is one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in Vietnam, located within the Ba Be National Park, a renowned ecological tourism destination. Ba Be Lake is situated 70 km northwest of Bac Kan city, in Nam Mau commune, Ba Be district. The lake sits at an elevation of 145 meters above sea level, stretching over 8 km in length and reaching widths of about 3 km. It covers an area of approximately 500 hectares, with an average depth of 20 meters and the deepest point at 35 meters. Surrounded by limestone mountain ranges and numerous underground streams, Ba Be Lake was recognized as one of the 20 special freshwater lakes requiring protection at the 1995 World Freshwater Conference in the United States.
In 1996, Ba Be Lake received recognition as a national cultural and historical site, and in 2011, it was designated as a Ramsar site—a wetland conservation area of global importance. Bac Kan, located in the Northeast region of Vietnam, is 165 km away from Hanoi. The journey from Bac Kan city to Ba Be Lake offers two routes: taking provincial road 256, approximately 60 km, or provincial road 257 to Cho Don market and then proceeding to Ba Be, covering about 70 km.
